Help us out
We don’t have long to wait until lockdown restrictions start to lift and we’re looking for volunteers to help out at one of London’s fastest growing and exciting social enterprises. If you didn’t already know, we fix up second hand bikes and donate them to charities that aim to empower young people from ethnic minority groups or we use them to deliver bike repair workshops in and around Brixton. The workshops range from one off sessions to 4-week courses (once a week) and involve up to 6 young people (aged between 11-16 years old) who learn how to do basic bike repairs such as changing tyres and brake pads.
We’re looking for volunteers with intermediate skills in bike maintenance who are comfortable teaching others, experience working with young people is a massive bonus, and would like to get involved with running our bike repair workshops in South London. If you want to help out but you don’t feel confident teaching others then we’re also looking for volunteers to repair and maintain bikes that have been donated to us and get them ready to give away to our young people at the end of the workshops.
You may want to give something back to the community, make a difference to the people around you, find a rewarding opportunity that helps you develop new skills or build on existing experience. Whatever your reasons, we can support you to do this and at the same time you can empower, enable and inspire others to cycle and help to create an inclusive community.
What we can offer:
Training and certification from Cycling UK on a 2-day Advanced Mechanic course and/or a 1 day Group Leader course
The chance to make an impact to young people's lives and help them discover a passion for cycling
Improve your CV, and we have connections with local bike shops if you’re trying to start your career in the Cycling industry
Access to tools, parts and equipment to service and fix your own bike
DBS check if you don’t already have one
What we ask for in return:
You are reliable and punctual
You can commit to volunteering at a minimum of 4 sessions (usually on Saturday morning), this will help us build a connection with young people and give them a sense of familiarity
We’re looking for volunteers to make a start ASAP, so if you’re interested please get in touch using the contact form or email phil@upcycleldn.co.uk.
